Profile
Follow in the footsteps of saints to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, founded by St Aidan in 635 AD in which the Lindisfarne Gospels were written. The existing ruins are the remains of the priory re-established in Norman times as a Benedictine monastery which came to ruin in 1536 under Henry VIII. It is now managed by English Heritage.
There is a museum next to the ruins (ticket includes access to both museum and priory). The museum and shop underwent a major refurbishment, and reopened in 2023 along with the introduction of a new memorial stone to St Cuthbert in the priory grounds.
Practical information about visiting the Priory can be found here.
