Profile
Every year in September, this crowd-funded archaeology project, led by experts from Durham University, comes to Holy Island. If you’ve ever wanted to be part of an exciting dig, this one’s for you. Enthusiasts are welcome, and there are also online courses you can use to prepare yourself.
You’ll be looking for evidence from the Medieval kingdom of Northumbria, before and after the Viking attacks, making new friends and spending a day, a few days or the full two weeks on Holy Island, helping unearth finds from this iconic historical site. In recent years the dig has made some impressive finds, including namestones, traces of buildings, burial sites, coins and a rare glass gaming piece.
Some practicalities
- Bookings usually open in December for the following year, and they tend to sell out, so get in there early.
- If you plan to join the dig, it is also essential that you book accommodation on the island early (or near it, though bear in mind you’ll have to work around the tides to join). Accommodation on the island in September tends to sell out completely.
- Don’t be intimidated by the thought of being an amateur digger. The crew is friendly and helpful.
